TELNET
I actually enjoyed the first part of the telnet, although I did end up emailing to my ordinary email address, I suspect I may have got my Uni email address wrong, but using my ordinary email address worked fine. Telnet to the Deakin Uni library was good, after I finished the set task I had a look at some of the other books by subject (pity I can't borrow the books). The result of the set search was

After that I went to Blinkenlights, which turned out to be a rather intriguing story of Star Wars, done in lines and characters like the very old drawings that used to be done using computers back in the 1960's and early 1970's. It was very well done, although i would have liked to have had an 'out' option rather than having to watch the whole thing, especially as I am not a huge star wars fan.
FTP
Using Filezilla to go to Curtin, and the second time I managed to download the readme.txt file ( couldn't find it last week, I was starting to think that someone had accidentally deleted it). The quote I had to find was "capitalisation matters" which makes sense, having had that problem when I was writing my website, that the internet, unlike Windows, is case sensitive, so you have to get the case correct in the documents or you end up with broken links because you can't find the file. I found Filezilla quite ok, comparable to the cute-ftp program I used to use years ago.
TRACEROUTE
Traceroute to curtin 21 hops (3 timeouts). ms 264/258/256 IP address is 134.7.179.53 from network tools.
I quite enjoyed this task, although I found it quite non challenging, perhaps because of previous use of internet and bulletin boards ( ok that was going back a long way), I found the programs quite easy to use. I could probably have spent a lot longer on the telnet, especially if I had borrowing access to the library, I don't mind at all using telnet for library access. It is certainly a lot better than the microfiche I have used in the past (yuck, I hate microfiche, they are murder on the eyes, such small print). The only one I found quite boring was the Traceroute, although when I was actually reading about it, I also went to the next page and read about Denial of Service attacks which I found more interesting, as I remember when the main site of the mailing lists I was on at the time, Queernet was hit with a denial of service attack, so it was interesting to read more about them.
Hope Module 2 doesn't take me as long to get done. Although admittedly it would not have taken as long if I hadn't had problems with the email address, and with finding the file on ftp. At least I am able to do the work, which is reassuring.
